Dead Waters

deadwatersDead Waters is certainly a bit of an oddity: it a horror film directed by an Italian, filmed in Russia, with English dialog. Though this mishmash of cultural influences could make for an absolute car crash of a film, Marioano Baino manged to keep it (mostly) cohesive. The overall aesthetic of the film is quite enjoyable; the film is drenched in rain-soaked atmosphere, saturated colors, dim lighting, and plenty of grindhouse grit. The plot concerns a young woman who has traveled to an isolated island convent on the Black Sea to discover more about the nuns her late father was sending money to throughout his life. Of course, not all is what it seems at the convent; the island soon becomes a locus of terror as our heroine uncovers the mystery of her forgotten childhood. In all truth, the plot is a tad convoluted and nonsensical in places, but thankfully Dead Waters never goes too far over the top.
