Ray Wise, Laura Palmer’s father on Twin Peaks, plays another cracked dad stuck in weirdsville. After 20 years of driving the same boring interstate to Grandma’s house for Christmas Eve, he decides to take the scenic route on a whim. Everyone knows change is bad, and his family wakes up from their car nap just in time for the spooky stuff. A ghostly hitch-hiking lady in white keeps appearing on the roadside. A creepy black car keeps passing by. And wouldn’t you know it, every time Dad pulls the car over to get his bearings, a family member meets a mysterious and bloody end. With a bickering brood as irritating as this one, I’d forgive Pop for taking them out, but he’s not to blame and may even be next on the list. Dead End is like an over-long Twilight Zone episode, and the punchline should be no surprise to anyone who’s seen that show. Pretty much a road to nowhere.
