Franz Ferdinand: Franz Ferdinand

franzferdinandHow can you not like a band whose stated intent is “to make music girls could dance to”? And believe me, these lads from Scotland more than fulfill their modest aim. Unlike many current rock acts that veer from bland to faceless, Franz Ferdinand possess a charm that is immediately recognizable: the songs strut along propelled by angular guitars, pulsing bass, high-hat rhythms, and sly and wry lyrics that never descend into the pretentiousness that mars other Britpop acts. While they make a tightly controlled din calculated to pack the dance floor, they do it quite casually. In fact, Franz Ferdinand makes it look as easy as an off-the-cuff remark dropped with elegance and aplomb. This is music for the modern dandy.

And really, there isn’t a better time than now to get into Franz Ferdinand as their debut album has recently been re-released with a bonus disc of b-sides that are just as essential as the album tracks.
