Cinema Europe: The Other Hollywood
Kenneth Branagh expertly narrates this six-part history of the European silent film era. It’s a rare look at tons of highlights from films many people would not otherwise be bothered to see (arguably, it’s probably the best way to experience the gems from some of the rough work sampled), and titles that simply aren’t available anymore. If nothing else, consider it a best-of reel of all the “important” films you hear the film snobs go on about. Personally, I enjoyed every minute of this condensed film history lesson. Watching the genesis and evolution of filming techniques, special effects, acting and story-telling styles is pure magic. The comparison of different directions taken by competing national film industries is fascinating and informative. Much of the footage is restored and quite beautiful, offering an amazing look back a hundred years. My only complaint is that there isn’t an accompanying booklet listing the films and actors featured, so I could have an easier time tracking down the original works. I consider this mini-series an invaluable resource, and am already having fun spotting the influences these landmark movies had on modern cinema.
