Bad Santa
Beyond the obscenity, depravity and shocking humor (or humorous shocks) is Bad Santa really a movie about redemption? Billy Bob Thornton is, as always, excellent. Lauren Graham’s performance is quite removed from her Gilmore image, Bernie Mac is reliable as always and Tony Cox is turning into a very solid character actor. There were moments in this film as laugh-out-loud funny and startling as some of the finest moments in Election. Santa exists in a world not unlike our own, but definitely different. Or is it just that we are not used to dealing with characters like the ones portrayed on-screen? And is there more to the film than just the foul language? Is there onscreen redemption to guarantee cinematic redemtion? Can the drunk, sexually deviant, safe-cracking Santa find something to live for? Or can he at least find a reason to finally die? Judge for yourself.
