Rabbits

rabbitsI always find David Lynch’s work surprising and enjoyable on many levels, but this episodic series of shorts adds further proof that the man is completely crackers. Mulholland Drive’s Naomi Watts, Laura Harring and Scott Coffey star, though you wouldn’t guess it to watch. Previous Lynch cast members have remarked about the challenges of acting in their extreme make-up: John Hurt as the highly-deformed Elephant Man, and Robert Blake as Lost Highway’s shocking-faced Mystery Man are just two examples. The costumes in Rabbits take the cake, with all three actors unrecognizable as well-dressed hares. The setting is a gloomy, dimly-lit apartment. A stationary, high-angle camera presents the experimental sit-com (for lack of a better genre tag) like we’re secretly spying on a tragic scene. The characters all have their turns at poetic soliloquies and classic TV entrances, pausing while an unseen audience’s applause plays out to eerie silence. Cryptic lines are delivered presumably out of order, over a droning, minimal score. Ghostly matches burn, a phone rings far too long, and the face of what might be Satan makes a brief appearance. The occasional, out-of-place laugh track only adds to this creepy game of What’s Wrong With This Picture. I can’t make heads or fluffy tails out of what Lynch is trying to say here, but as usual he’s given us a look into a world like none we’ve ever seen before.
