Bettie Page: Dark Angel
I’ve been waiting ages for a Bettie Page bio-pic, so I’m sad to say what a disappointment this is. Paige Richards certainly has Bettie’s look and mannerisms down pat, but her acting leaves much to be desired. The story focuses on the last few years of Bettie’s modeling career, and even at a trim 76 minutes, the movie really drags. What could have been an insightful look into a turbulent turning point in the cult icon’s life is played out as boring as people washing dishes. Anyone watching this without familiarity of Ms. Page’s history would be left utterly baffled as to how she got to this point in her life story, and why she was motivated to do anything depicted in the film. The highlights are definitely the recreations of Irving Klaw’s 16mm cheesecake films, though your time would be better spent watching the originals. Fortunately, Cult Epics (who produced this disc) will be releasing new DVDs of Bettie’s films in early 2005.
