The Third Wheel
Like so many of the over 100 movies in my Netflix queue, I forgot what prompted me to add this 2002 film starring Luke Wilson and Denise Wild Things Richards. Luke plays his standard likeable geek/ doofus who longs for office-mate Richards. When he finally gets up the gumption to ask her out, their non-date date is interrupted when he hits a vagrant with his pimping-green Taurus wagon. Said vagrant becomes the titular “third wheel” on their date, and the film moves along, seemingly unoriginal. Less than 90 minutes long, the film takes an interesting turn in the final third that raises it above its seemingly ordinary beginning. The interplay between writer/ vagrant Jay Lacopo and Matt Damon in a cameo was when I started to realize there was more to this movie than first glance would indicate. Third Wheel isn’t Memento, Usual Suspects or even The Village, but it was enjoyable. Would I recommend it to Money Madden or G. Mike? Probably not, but it is neither whimsical nor a Grade-B action film possibly starring Wesley Snipes.
