Matchstick Men

matchstickmenI love Raising Arizona. I love Nic Cage in Raising Arizona. I expected big things from him. Instead we get Pokey, Nic Cage, Action Star ? , or the “clenched-fist, stare-down, show-off-bad-hair-plugs” angsty thespian. Ugh to all of them. Ridley Scott: there are those who love him and everything he does. I am not one of them. He has made some good movies. Matchstick Men was a recent feature directed by Mr. Scott and starring Mr. Cage. Why would I even see it? I’m a sucker for confidence games movies. Nic Cage was actually decent in it, even though there was a great deal of room for his ham-scented skills. Granted, he had his moments of over-the-top, but watching him is akin to watching an infant take some second and third steps: you’re thrilled with the ones they make, but know that they will fall. It is inevitable. Plot-wise, it was a con-man movie, there were some twists. Cast-wise, Sam Rockwell and Alison Lohman were very good.
