The title isn’t about drugs. If you’re in the know you already know that. If you’re not in the know, I won’t tell you what it is, but trust me when I tell you that it is very clearly explained. <snarky review>It was like a fan of Steven Soderbergh’s read Robert Altman’s Shortcuts for Dummies and was hired to remake that Duchovny-Driver classic, Return to Me</snarky review>. 21 Grams features two of the most interesting actors working today, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro, and an excellent performance by Naomi Watts in a starkly shot intertwining story of love, loss and redemption. The story unwinds like a slow-burning candle lit at both ends taking visual cues from Soderbergh and Nolan with the unapologetic narrative being delivered to the viewer in small doses like the best crack in the world: enough to keep us fixated, but always wanting more.
