Night Watch
This Russian supernatural action adventure blew away The Lord of the Rings at that country’s box office, and it’s not hard to see why. Non-stop sensory overload, special effects and humor cram the screen, making it almost impossible to keep up with the subtitles. Visually it takes crib notes from Terry Gilliam, Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Sam Raimi, with epic sets and attention to micro-details and events. The story (first in a trilogy) involves a centuries-old agreement between the Armies of Light and Dark to keep their cool in the world of humans, while waiting for the chosen one to arrive and tip the balance for the rightful side. Certain parties believe he may already be here, and the cracks in the truce start spreading. Lots of creatures and characters are introduced, and the hints of their back-stories suggest the sequels will be even more fun
